Frances T. Greiff
Frances earned a master's degree at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism. She married a classmate who became a newspaperman, and she became a magazine editor. Later, for 26 years she taught high school English and journalism and was advisor to newspapers in two schools. Now retired, she is a volunteer as a Meals on Wheels deliverer, and she tutors children after school at a downtown Atlanta church. "I was happy to tell PRINTER LADY'S story because Sarah Hillhouse wasn't here to tell it herself, and even if she'd tried to tell it, she was too busy facing the future alone and rearing three children. She was perhaps the first woman newspaper editor in the United States and certainly the first in Georgia." "I've always loved newspapers. I've always respected our government's foundation on press freedom. My favorite quote is Thomas Jefferson's, 'Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter'." |
